Do you sometimes feel your life is missing something? That the greatest moments in life are somehow passing you by?
I get you. And in this post, I will explain to you the roots and solution for why you might feel this way.
It should be so simple: We all want to be happy. And everyone, including you, deserves happiness in their life. But am I truly happy? Are you?
For me, that used to be a really difficult question. I have no big worries in my life – no major health issues, a good job with a lot of freedom, a comfortable, safe place to live, and incredible friends & family. Yet, I still catch myself feeling not happy enough and somehow unfulfilled. Even to me, this feels ridiculous – how dare I?
We live in a world of abundance: You can get great entertainment at the click of a button. Our supermarkets and restaurants offer the best foods from all over the world. We have a wealth of immersive experiences to go to with our friends – concerts, museums, going to the cinema. And, unless we are in the middle of a pandemic, once or twice per year, we can even travel to whatever place in the world we most want to see.
How can you not be content with your life? Why would you feel like you need more?
After many years of struggling with this, I understand the problem now. I have found ways, tools, and habits to re-discover happiness in my everyday life – and lessen this strange urge of needing more. Here is the root of the problem:
The biggest obstacle to our happiness
We have so many things going on in our life. We rarely do one thing at once, and even when we do, there is usually a next thing or two waiting already.
Ask yourself: When was the last meal where you had zero distractions – no glancing at your phone, no conversation, and no thoughts about the next item on your to-do list? Where you focused entirely on actually tasting the food from the first bite until your plate was clean?
The reality is: There are plenty of things you could be happy about every single day. How soft and safe your bed feels when you wake up. The people that willingly share their time, life, and love with you. The great freedom and security you have compared to any other human generation before us. How food can capture your imagination and teleport you to a foreign country. How alive you feel after working out.
I suspect what you are lacking in life are not reasons to be happy, but likely just the awareness of what you have.
Life is full of beauty – but you unlearned seeing it
Every single day is full of small miracles. But many of us fail to see and appreciate almost all of them.
I was exactly the same. So often I went through my day mindlessly. Taking everything for granted. And then, at night, feeling somehow empty and unfulfilled – where was the happiness, after all?Do you know this feeling?
The truth is: happiness is not a permanent state. You can only be happy in the present moment. And for that, you need to open your senses and your mind to perceive the beauty of life around you. Otherwise, it will pass. Unnoticed, unappreciated.
Without awareness, you will not be happy
Being in the moment really makes you happier – science has known this for years.
This is why I have committed myself to no longer chase happiness. Instead, I am going on a Pursuit of Awareness. Come join me!
We are all on the same journey in life. And how much happiness you encounter along this path has everything to do with how aware you manage to be.
I hope that through this blog, I can help you find new mindful habits, indulge in simple, delicious recipes, and discover small helpers to make being aware easier. And maybe even my attempts at poetry will occasionally make you smile – although that I am doubtful about 😉
